On Sunday, October 7th, 2010 in a quiet inner city community of Signal Hill shots were fired in the middle of the day. A man left his home at 12:30 p.m. where he began shooting a gun. The police arrived immediately and the gunman began shooting at police. Many local residents ran for their safety but luckily no one was injured except for the shooter. A 17-year-old local resident, Alicia Taylor was getting something from her car when she heard the gunshots. In fact, one of the bullets went right over her head. After realizing what was going on, she ran for cover in her home. After firing a number of rounds at the police, the man turned the gun on himself. He later died at hospital. He is described as an Asian man in his early 20’s. The reason for this incident is still unknown.
This story made me feel very nervous and scared. I live in Signal Hill and having a shooting happen so close to home makes be see how careful we must all be no matter where we are. You would think that our neighbourhoods are our safe places but sometimes they are not. This story really hit home for me because I know Alicia Taylor through my social network and realizing how close she came to getting shot really made me realize how anyone could be hurt on any given day. There are two things that I really thought about when I heard of this shooting. The first one is how we should live each day to the fullest because you just never know what could happen. The second thought was about the shooters parents and how sad they must feel that this has happened to their son. I think the man must have been dealing with some pretty bad things if he went that far to shot a gun and then shot himself dead.

I completely agree with you. This is such a tragic event to hear about and the fact that it happened right here in calgary, worries me. In my opinion our city is becoming more dangerous but that just means we have to be more careful. The girl who almost got shot must be in complete shock. I am curious to know the reasoning behind the shooters actions. I hope that the neighbors around the area in signal hill recover from this incident.
ReplyDeleteI agree it would be very scary to have something dangerous happen near anyones neighbourhood, in fact, in my neighbourhood, there were a couple of teenagers hanging out at the park near my home really late at night, then a random guy gets off his car and stabs them, this made me feel unsafe to know that things like that could happen. Fortunately no one was killed.
ReplyDeletePeople in this world have many different upbringings and respond differently to their environment. Some would argue that there is nothing we can do about people like this that are clearly unstable. I believe that all we can do is treat everyone with respect and as a society stop placing so much pressure and judgement on the heads of young people. Sometimes people crack, and things like this happen.
