GIVE THE MONEY BACK

There has been a lot of fighting in North Africa since February 2010. This rebellion was in the country of Libya to depose the current leader, as the people wanted a new government. The people of Libya had enough of the dictatorship  of Moammar Kadafi. After he was captured and killed last week, investigators in many different countries have reported investments totalling over $200 billion.. During his 41-year reign, he amassed this great wealth in cash and assets in various banks and countries around the world. Libya has the largest reserves of oil in Africa and between him and his family they were taking the profits away from the people and using it for themselves. The money that has been taken away from the people is now being tied up by International law. Only the Untied States has returned over $700 million and the UN has returned another $1.5 billion.

With a population of 6.5 million people, of which over 60% live below the poverty line, this amount of money could do a lot of good for this country. If it was returned to the people of Libya it would help them bring their country out of all the bad economic problems they have. I believe that World Governments should forget this policy and return the money back to the people of Libya. It was the people’s money in the first place.

Signal Hill Shooting on Thanksgiving Day Sunday.

On Sunday, October 7th, 2010 in a quiet inner city community of Signal Hill shots were fired in the middle of the day.  A man left his home at 12:30 p.m. where he began shooting a gun.  The police arrived immediately and the gunman began shooting at police.  Many local residents ran for their safety but luckily no one was injured except for the shooter.  A 17-year-old local resident, Alicia Taylor was getting something from her car when she heard the gunshots.   In fact, one of the bullets went right over her head.  After realizing what was going on, she ran for cover in her home. After firing a number of rounds at the police, the man turned the gun on himself.  He later died at hospital.  He is described as an Asian man in his early 20’s.  The reason for this incident is still unknown.

This story made me feel very nervous and scared.  I live in Signal Hill and having a shooting happen so close to home makes be see how careful we must all be no matter where we are.  You would think that our neighbourhoods are our safe places but sometimes they are not.  This story really hit home for me because I know Alicia Taylor through my social network and realizing how close she came to getting shot really made me realize how anyone could be hurt on any given day.  There are two things that I really thought about when I heard of this shooting.  The first one is how we should live each day to the fullest because you just never know what could happen.  The second thought was about the shooters parents and how sad they must feel that this has happened to their son.  I think the man must have been dealing with some pretty bad things if he went that far to shot a gun and then shot himself dead.
